Dramayama

EN On the occasion of the 12th of October, Columbus Day, also known as the Day of Indigenous Resistance, Filmhuis Cavia is pleased to present this experimental documentary followed by a Q&A with its director Jeanette Groenendaal and Branly Lopez Quemé, protagonist of the film.

Dramayama is a journey Inside, an Astrological Cosmic Dance beyond the End of the Maya Calendar. Follow Branly, Guatemalan timekeeper, 21st century Mayan, on his cosmic quest for meaning and reaffirmation of his Mayan spirituality through the echoes of an ancient civilization in the Vedic South of India. Ever since the ‘End of the Mayan calendar’ Branly has researched techniques and the meaning of Mayan Cosmology, trying to recover ancient rituals and knowledge painfully devastated by 500 years of colonization. During his vision quest he slowly recognizes deep roots in the echoes of an old civilisation. Meanwhile the volcano erupts, the temple elephant dies and the turtle breathes home.

Shunji Iwai Special: Hana and Alice

Shunji Iwai | 2004 | Japan | 135’ | EN subs

hanaalice-.jpg

EN To celebrate Shunji Iwai’s new film, Kyrie No Uta from this year, we will screen two of his films to get into the mood. Shunji Iwai started making films in the 90's in Japan, a time when people felt a pervasive sense of depression towards the coming millennium, and cultural and political sterility. Many of the characters in his films struggle with friendships, personhood, and are stuck in a kind of violence and passivity. They don't have the will to fight, but keep murmuring to themselves, "where am I going?", "what do we do now?". However, it is somewhat different from what we know as an existential crisis. This is because what Shunji portrays is not a coming of age but a choice of people to be in darkness by embracing their failure, pain and loss. Thus his stories wake up our inner child who was a romantic and sentimental creature, with a tendency towards solitude. And asking after each other:

How are you?
I am doing well.

Hana and Alice is a teenage romance film and describes an ineffable sense of universality through a reckless teenage relationship. The film makes us nostalgic for times we have never had and things we have never experienced, yet it feels real. Scenes of cherry blossoms, trains, stalking, amnesia, and love confessions happen in youth and silliness, finding eccentricity in a life of mundanity. Despite differences and weird decisions of childhood friends Hana and Alice, they never abandon each other, and sprinkle a little glitter in a life otherwise black and white.

There will be food (onigiri and taiyaki) in between the two films.

All About Lily Chou-Chou tells a tragic story of friendship and teenage betrayal. Due to the discontinuous timeline, it is hard to grasp the full story. Insecure teenage fear fuelled by ignorance of society might seem as reality bites, but the film portrays the most horrific subjects like rape, murder and bullying combined with fragments of memories and emotions. In this film, music is the strongest medium through its emotional outpouring. Debussy, Lily Chou-Chou, Wilco, LCD Soundsystem, The Smiths and Talking Heads linger around the souls who need a friend.

There will be food (onigiri and taiyaki) in between the two films.

MEER – The battle for Amsterdam's last fields

+ Q&A met Iris Poels

Bart Melief | 2023 | NL | 74’ | EN subs

MEER2-.jpg

Verzet is vruchtbaar!

EN The last organic agricultural lands in the city of Amsterdam are located in the Lutkemeerpolder. For centuries, farmers and their fields were part of the city, but now only one piece remains. And that is exactly where the municipality has planned huge distribution centers.

GroenLinks alderperson Marieke van Doorninck defends the plans and is determined to have the business park built. Trijntje Hoogendam's organic care farm 'De Boterbloem' has to be demolished and she is resisting with everything she has. Involved Amsterdam residents are taking increasingly tough actions. How did it come to this? Why is the business park actually being built? And are there alternatives? Filmmaker Bart Melief followed the development of the industrial estate in the Lutkemeerpolder and the protests against it for three years. With his film he wants to record this historical event and erect a monument for a small polder in a big city.

This is the first time we screen this film here with English subtitles and we are very fortunate to have Iris Poels with us for a Q&A afterwards. She continues the struggle by being an amazing organizer of the inspiring Voedselpark Amsterdam campaign.

Resistance is fertile!

Warning! This construction site is a playground!

Shorts by 7 filmmakers & performance

Warning-this-constructionsite-is-a-playground-.jpg

EN Watch out for falling debris and put your hard hat on… you are entering the construction zone. Song-smith Pedro, video-rodeo Fishra, and camera-trainer Joe stood in front of a brick wall for a day with their disembodied pet hand Manivela. Several months later they had a music video. Excited, they forraged up and down and round and round the world for other films about handiwork and DIY that dance on the edge of silliness. On 22 October, they host an evening in Cavia with the best finds of the hunt, along with the first screening of the music video "Construção" and a performance by Pedro and his hand!

Pedro Kastelijns, Brazilian singer-songwriter, producer and visual artist has been working around the theme of construction, playing and ‘doing things with your hands' to build emotional and physical shelter in one's life. Fishra and Joe Eshuis are filmmakers. The three met and started collaborating at the Rietveld Academie.

The Short Films of Paul Nouhet + Q&A

camilesanscontact-.jpg

EN An evening with films by French director Paul Nouhet, coming to Paris to join us for a Q&A. Born and raised in Bordeaux, Nouhet's filmmaking adventures weave together the past, present, and future in an exploration of identity and nostalgia. Paul Nouhet's journey began in his hometown, where he honed his skills by making skate videos with friends. After furthering his education in cinema in Brussels, he joined the editing department at La Fémis in 2016. Alongside his editing practice, Paul directs films where he and his friends invent and embody different characters. His latest project, "Salut Les Zins!", chronicles his adolescence, delving into the complexities of a rather estranged group of old friends, trying to find each other or themselves again on a long summer night.
