NL Muzikale begeleiding in de bioscopen. Rond 1910-1930 was dit de normale gang van zaken in Nederland. Maar met de komst van geluidsfilm, de zogenaamde ‘talkies’, is dat nogal ongebruikelijk geworden. In zekere zin is dat jammer, want het geeft de kijker een heel andere bioscoopervaring dan we tegenwoordig gewend zijn; de muzikant maakt van de film echt iets van zichzelf.
Met dit in het achterhoofd vond Hilde van der Wal het tijd om de oude filmtraditie in ere te houden. Daarom benaderde die Julia Bekker (OOO, Potgrond) en Hugo Heinen (Atoomclub) om hun eigen composities te brengen naar VERA Zienema, een alternatieve buurtbioscoop in Groningen. Na meerdere succesvolle vertoningen werden ze de huisband van Zienema, die surrealistische, Weimar- en avant-gardefilms begeleiden.
En nu is het tijd voor wat kruisbestuiving! De Zienema-huisband komt naar Filmhuis Cavia om Gustav & Grace (Lucas Boerwinkel, 2022) en La Coquille et le Clergyman (Germaine Dulac, 1928) muzikaal te begeleiden. Na de live muziekvertoning is er een Q&A met Hilde van der Wal, Lucas Boerwinkel, Julia Bekker en Hugo Heinen.
EN Musical accompaniment at the cinemas. Around 1910-1930 this was a normal course of events in the Netherlands. But with the advent of sound film, the so-called ’talkies’, this has become rather unusual. In a way this is a pity, because it provides the viewer a completely different cinema experience than what we are used to nowadays; the musician really turns the film into something of their own.
With this in mind Hilde van der Wal thought it was time to honor the old cinema tradition. Hence, they approached Julia Bekker (OOO, Potgrond) and Hugo Heinen (Atoomclub) to bring their own compositions to VERA Zienema, an alternative community-run cinema located in Groningen. After multiple successful screenings they became the Zienema house band, accompanying surrealist, Weimar and avant-garde films.
And now it’s time for some cross-pollination! The Zienema house band will come to Filmhuis Cavia to provide musical accompaniment to Gustav & Grace (Lucas Boerwinkel, 2022) and La Coquille et le Clergyman (Germaine Dulac, 1928). There will be a Q&A with Hilde van der Wal, Lucas Boerwinkel, Julia Bekker and Hugo Heinen, after the live music screening.
