Journey to Tarakan + My Notes About Maiko's Country + Yasujiro's Journey

NL

EN An evening curated and presented by artist Rizki Lazuardi on post-colonial Indonesia through the lenses of 3 filmmakers. Japan and the Netherlands once competed for dominance over Indonesia, a strategic country in Southeast Asia. Throughout the first half of 20th century, the archipelago was a place where millions of people were stranded and scattered as a result of colonial occupation. Half a century later, three films were made to reenact these journeys. Instead of perpetuating big war-related narration, three filmmakers, a Japanese, a Dutch, and an Indonesian, shed light on personal memory, myth, and popular culture. More info→

Oncle Bernard: L'Anti-Leçon d'Économie (A Counter-Lesson in Economics)

Richard Brouillette | 2015 | Québec/Catalonië | 79' | EN subs

NL

"Oncle Bernard", was killed during the Charlie Hebdo shooting, on January 7, 2015. This fascinating interview with him was filmed in March 2000 as part of Richard Brouillette‘s documentary Encirclement – Neo-Liberalism Ensnares Democracy. Frank and unvarnished, this is a true "counter lesson in economics" in which the director gives centre stage to Maris' vibrant, incisive, and mischievous words of dissent. Maris strikes at leisure, unleashing hard-hitting truths that challenge the dogmas that are incessantly rehashed by the vibrant choir enslaved to the "science" of Economics. With his wit, eloquence, and erudition, and his prodigious capacity to distill complex issues and make the most arduous subject matters exciting, Oncle Bernard unveils his courageously original ideas over the course of the interview – ideas that are all the more precious in this era of intellectual resignation and economic austerity.

EN On Monday, April 8, a film will be shown in Filmhuis Cavia by the Amsterdam Philosophers Association. This time the film will be related to the journey they will make two weeks later to Genoa. The port city of Genoa has often been the scene of so-called Spaghetti crime films, and now they appear on our film-menu. These films were mainly shot in the 1970s, a time when Genoa is a center of political opposition to dictator Georgios Papadopoulos. There will also be an accompanying talk, sadly not by Ilja Leonard Pfeiffer.

Shakedown

EN Shakedown was an underground lesbian strip club founded by and for black women in Los Angeles. While dancing to pulsating hip-hop beats, with go-go dance and strip shows, it was a central point for the city’s lesbian club scene. By showing the protagonists backstage and in interviews, this intimate chronicle reveals that Shakedown was more than just a strip club; it brought together and galvanised a community of freaks and queers of colour, against the adversity from reprisals by the local police. Being a member of the community herself, Leilah Weinraub offers a celebration of female desire that has rarely been seen on the big screen.
