Cabra Marcado Para Morrer (Man Marked for Death, 20 Years Later)
Eduardo Coutinho | 1984 | Brazil | 119’ | EN subtitles

EN Listed by the Brazilian Academy as one of the 5 best Brazilian films of all time, Cabra Marcado Para Morrer (Man Marked for Death, 20 Years Later) is a sort of meta-film, with its production interrupted by twenty years of brutal military dictatorship. The film was originally conceived as a fiction based on the true story of João Pedro Teixeira, a peasant leader executed in 1962 by large landowners in rural Pernambuco. His wife, Elizabeth, was to play herself, alongside other villagers who also acted in the film. During shooting in April 1964, the set was stormed by the military, who arrested many crew members and confiscated most of the materials. Twenty years later, the filmmaker returned to the location to meet the survivors, including Elizabeth, and document what had since happened to them and their families. The documentary stands as a powerful testimony to a dark period in Brazilian contemporary history that should never be repeated.
Brazil Unfiltered comes back from 1 to 31 October with a special curation of documentary films to contextualise the presidential elections taking place in Brazil this month. Centred around territorial struggles and the frontlines of resistance, the programme starts with a masterpiece from the late Eduardo Coutinho, followed by a bonus screening, a sequence of 3 films set in the Amazon, and a closure event + screening about climate resilience and ecological farming.

+ foyer party by Machine Cult Amsterdam
Dimitri Kirsanoff | 1926 | France | 38’ | silent, no language with live score

Azart – Come Make Art + Q&A
Masha Novikova & Annike Kaljouw | 2023 | NL | 83’ | EN subtitles

At the helm is the creator of this sailing work of art: captain and actor August Dirks, who lived and worked on the Azart for more than 30 years. Amsterdam's Azartplein is named after this fool's boat.
EN Bonus screening: due to the massive attendance in April 2026, we will screen Ouvidor again.

Ex-Shaman
Luiz Bolognesi | 2018 | Brazil | 81’ | EN subtitles

EN Ex-Shaman is a non-romanticised portrait of the indigenous experience and resilience in contemporary times. Perpera lived in the forest without contact with white people until he was 20 years old. He was a powerful man of the Paiter Suruí people until contact with white men in 1969. Nowadays, illness is a risk for a community increasingly unable to isolate itself from the modernisation brought by white people and the power of the evangelical church.
After being accused by an evangelical pastor of being in league with the Devil, he is forced to become a doorman at the Evangelical church, renouncing his powers as a shaman. However, this mission, commanded by the intolerant pastor, is put to the test when someone from the village witnesses death firsthand, and the indigenous man's sensitivity to the spirits of the forest proves indispensable.

Two summers ago, Demosthenes was stuck in Athens dealing with health issues of his father. This served as an excuse to reach out to his ex, Panos. Meanwhile, Panos got the overly cute Carmen, something he soon regretted. Likewise, Demosthenes seems to have regretted breaking up with Panos. Or did he not? Heavy
Max Rothman | 2026 | USA | 110’ | no dialogue

EN In a bucolic American town, nature watches ambivalently as an unnamed man commits a murder. He goes through the mundane tasks necessary to cover up his crime, and with each step loses connection with his own humanity. Told in just 44 shots with no on-screen dialogue, Heavy is an examination of the dehumanization that takes place when someone numbs themselves into justifying evil actions, and the habitual rationalization that allows society to continue down a path of malevolence in the name of self-preservation.

Time of the Gypsies
Emir Kusturica | 1988 | Italy, UK, Yugoslavia | 142’ | EN subtitles

EN Inspired by a newspaper article on child smuggling rings in the 1980s, Kustorica crafted this story with his traditional trace of magical realism and mysticism, to create an extraordinary epic. Follow Perhan, a young Romani teenager with telekinetic powers, as he is seduced by the promised of Ahmed, a wealthy but shady figure who promises to take care of Perhan’s sister’s medical treatment if they join him to Italy. Lured into the elder’s corrupt surroundings, Perhan sets out to lose everything.
Considered to be one of Kustorica’s best films, and earning him the award for best director at the 1989 Cannes Film Festival, the film was filmed between Sarajevo, Skopje and Milan, and features extensive use of the Romani language. The original soundtrack was composed by Goran Bregović, as one of the many instances of collaboration between the two artists.

Piripkura
Renata Terra, Mariana Oliva, Bruno Jorge | 2017 | Brazil | 81’ | EN subtitles

EN Piripkura is the chronicle of an expedition in the Amazonian habitat of the nomadic Piripkura ethnic group’s last remaining members, who can only have their territory protected if there is proof they are still living there. Two of only three of them are known to still live in this area. Every two years, a team of governmental workers trek into the jungle for weeks in search of them. Their most important possession is a torch that was lit in 1998 and has remained so ever since. The area where they live is encircled by farms and sawmills, whose almost inevitable expansion is taking place through violent means.
The film sheds light on the tragedy befalling indigenous Amazon people: the systematic violence used against them is a constant menacing presence. Despite the impressive resilience and tenacity of the last of the Piripkura, an inevitable question hangs in the air: how long can it last?

Looking Back – by Porn Film Festival Amsterdam
Various | 107’ | EN subtitles

EN This film block was screened at Porn Film Festival Amsterdam, earlier this year.
For a long time, the only places you could watch porn were small, not-too-obvious venues, and usually under the shadow of censorship and the constant threat of closure. Through archival footage and first-hand recollections, we revisit some of these sites: Theatro Gil Vicente in Barcelos, the Mineshaft in Marseille, Bada theatre in Seoul. We also meet Lynnee Breedlove, who spearheaded Homobiles, a queer cab service in San Francisco, and Luz Emilia García, one of the precursors of porn cinema in Colombia. We look back to cherish the oft-forgotten treasures of those who broke ground way before us.
The screening is a fundraiser for a nascent space for pornography and community in Cali, Colombia.
TGX | André Senra Azevedo | 2025 | Portugal | 8’
After the Carnation Revolution, Portugal became a democracy and opened itself to the world. One of its consequences was the spread of erotic and pornographic films. This documentary tells the story of how these films arrived at Theatro Gil Vicente, an emblematic cultural venue of Barcelos.
Les fantômes du hard | Lazare Lazarus | 2025 | France | 28’
In August 2022, squatters in Marseille stumble upon a treasure: the archives of the founder of France’s first hardcore BDSM club, the Mineshaft, which opened in 1967. What follows is an investigation to trace history through these archives, piece together a forgotten story, and attempt to build a lineage, a dialogue with his ghost.
The film explores how we might build lines of kinship and continuity with the queer generations that came before us. Central to the film is a meditation on memory, absence, and the intergenerational threads that shape queer existence. The film is made from the archives of the Mineshaft’s founder, preserved at Mémoire des Sexualités, a queer archive center based in Marseille: digitized VHS tapes, intimate photographs, lovers’ letters, objects…
Backseat | Rae Threat, Jiz Lee, Robin Astera | 2025 | Germany, UK, US | 6’
A short porn drive through the streets of Berlin navigates trans masculine desire and queer liberation. The video is an homage to Homobiles queer cab service spearheaded by Lynnee Breedlove, the 1980's safer sex PSAs from Gay Men's Health Crisis such as “Car Service” taxi porn, and the dream of a world that is safe to travel freely.
Paradise | Minki Hong | 2023 | South Korea | 30’
A fabulous storyteller presents a fascinating tale from yesteryear. A cast of friendly objects joins the storyteller, wandering through the theater while remembering days past when the space used to be filled with gay theater-goers. Their stories revolve around the cruising culture of second-run movie houses in Seoul but also expand to include their memories of gay bars in the Jongro neighborhood, offering a vivid depiction of the early years of South Korean queer culture during the 1970s and 1980s, which until now has been lost to history.
The Night of the Minotaur | Juliana Zuluaga Montoya | 2023 | Colombia | 11’
People wonder where birds go to die. My grandmother’s village had a lighthouse nestled among the mountains, a forest teeming with creatures, and an echo that resonated at night like a warm breeze. Les Feuilles Mortes
L'Amour à la Mer
Guy Gilles | 1965 | France | 73’ | EN subtitles

EN A young Parisian woman falls in love with a sailor she meets on holiday. Summer brings them together, autumn takes them in different directions. He returns to Brest, she to Paris, hoping for the chance to see him again. They continue writing while living separate lives. Chansons, photographs, flashbacks, and collages drift through the film, allowing past and present, memory and lived experience to constantly overlap. As the relationship begins to fade, the figures left wandering through the film embody both a sense of desolation and the possibility of another life.
The debut feature of the singular and unjustly overlooked Guy Gilles, with brief appearances by Alain Delon, Jean-Pierre Léaud, Juliette Gréco and Jean-Claude Brialy.
The transition from summer to autumn has long been a poetic symbol of change. Perhaps this is why the French call it 'Les Feuilles Mortes'. A love fading, an aspiration, the fear of forgetting, a goodbye to what was familiar. Everything transforms, taking on another form.
