NL Filmliefhebbers in Nederland kunnen hun hart ophalen! WORM (Rotterdam) presenteert in samenwerking met VERA Zienema (Groningen) en Filmhuis Cavia een gedeeltelijke retrospectief van de gerenommeerde Japanse regisseur Takashi Ito. Het filmprogramma bevat een samengestelde selectie van Ito's meest iconische werken, die zijn unieke benadering naar experimenteel filmmaken laat zien. Kortom, een zeldzame kans om zijn films op het grote doek te ervaren.
Takashi Ito, geboren in 1956, is een visionaire kunstenaar die een grote invloed heeft gehad op de experimentele filmscene. Zijn films staan bekend om hun onconventionele technieken, hypnotiserende beelden en intellectueel uitdagende thema's. Ito's werk is vertoond op grote filmfestivals over de hele wereld en zijn invloed is te zien in het werk van veel hedendaagse filmmakers.
De vertoning biedt het publiek de mogelijkheid om de breedte en diepte van Ito's artistieke output te ervaren. Op het programma staan enkele van zijn bekendste werken zoals Spacy en Thunder, de meeste geprojecteerd op hun oorspronkelijke formaat, 16 mm. Elke film is een meesterwerk op zich en toont Ito's unieke verfijndheid en zijn beheersing van het medium.
EN Film enthusiasts in the Netherlands are in for a treat as WORM (Rotterdam) in collaboration with VERA Zienema (Groningen) and Filmhuis Cavia present a partial retrospective of films by the acclaimed Japanese director Takashi Ito. The program will feature a curated selection of Ito’s most iconic works, showcasing his unique approach to experimental filmmaking; a rare opportunity to experience his films on the big screen.
Born in 1956, Takashi Ito is a visionary artist who has made a significant impact on the experimental film scene. His films are known for their unconventional techniques, hypnotic visuals, and thought-provoking themes. Ito’s work has been showcased in major film festivals around the world, and his influence can be seen in the works of many contemporary filmmakers alike.
The screening will offer audiences the opportunity to experience the breadth and depth of Ito’s artistic output. The program will include some of his best known works, such as “Spacy,” and “Thunder,” most projected on their original format, 16mm. Each film is a masterpiece in its own right, showcasing Ito’s unique sensibilities and his mastery of the medium.

Pre-event: Food Autonomy Festival – Resistance & Movement Building

NL Het Food Autonomy Festival (FAF) gaat over het presenteren en vieren van alternatieven en verzet tegen het door de staat en het door het bedrijfsleven gecontroleerde industriële voedselsysteem. Het is een plek waar perspectieven, ideeën, kennis en vaardigheden over onderwerpen met betrekking tot voedsel en sociale rechtvaardigheid worden uitgewisseld; een moment om nieuwe relaties te creëren en bestaande te versterken.
"Aangezien de editie van dit jaar een speciale focus heeft op bewegingsopbouw, willen we dit thema introduceren door landarbeiders, inheemse en boeren te verbinden in de strijd tegen industriële voedselsystemen tijdens ons pre-evenement in Filmhuis Cavia op 3 juni. Van Zuid-Amerika tot Spanje, de twee films die we zullen vertonen, Minga en Frutos de Resistencia, laten verschillende strijden zien met betrekking tot landbouw, rechten en de kracht van sterke gemeenschappen. Beide films zijn positieve voorbeelden van collectieve strijd en sterke weerstand, die kunnen ontstaan bij het creëren van ruimtes zoals het Food Autonomy Festival. Laten we samenkomen om te verbinden, samen te leren en weerstand te bieden!"
EN The Food Autonomy Festival (FAF) is about presenting and celebrating alternatives and resistance to the state and corporate-controlled industrial food system. It is a place where perspectives, ideas, knowledge and skills about topics related to food and social justice are exchanged; a moment to create new relationships and strengthen existing ones.
"As this year's edition has a special focus on movement building, we want to introduce this theme with connecting farmworker, indigenous and peasant struggles against industrial food systems at our pre-event at Filmhuis Cavia on June 3rd. From South America to Spain, the two films we will screen, Minga and Frutos de Resistencia, capture different struggles in relation to agriculture, rights and the power of strong communities. Together, the films show positive examples of collective struggles and strong resistances, which can be formed when creating spaces such as the Food Autonomy Festival. Let's come together to connect, co-learn and resist!"

NL De documentaire Frutos de Resistencia portretteert vijf aangrijpende verhalen over hoop en verzet uit de zee van plastic in Almeria, het middelpunt van de industriële landbouw in Europa. Door de ogen van vrouwen, migranten en vakbondsleden worden alledaagse ervaringen van uitsluiting en uitbuiting door de Spaanse samenleving zichtbaar gemaakt. Frutos de Resistencia biedt krachtige perspectieven op het samen organiseren van mensen om te vechten voor hun fundamentele rechten in de industriële landbouw. De documentaire is gemaakt als onderdeel van de langdurige samenwerking met arbeiders en de vakbond SOC-SAT in Andalusië.
EN The documentary Frutos de Resistencia portrays five poignant stories of hope and resistance from the sea of plastic in Almeria, the focal point of industrial agriculture in Europe. Through the eyes of women, migrants and trade unionists, everyday experiences of exclusion and exploitation by Spanish society are made visible. Frutos de Resistencia offers powerful perspectives on organizing people together to fight for their fundamental rights in industrial agriculture. The documentary was created as part of the long-standing cooperation with workers and the SOC-SAT trade union in Andalusia.

NL Van Patagonië tot de bergen van Mexico komen gemeenschappen in opstand. Ze stellen de vernietiging van hun territoria en hun leven aan de kaak. Op basis van hun cultureel erfgoed organiseren ze zich om het bloedbad te stoppen en inspirerende oplossingen te creëren. De documentaire Minga is een echo van deze stemmen van verzet. Pauline en Damien brachten twee jaar bij hen door en lieten hen volledige vrijheid van meningsuiting hebben. Hun getuigenissen, afkomstig uit zoveel verschillende landen, weven een gemeenschappelijk verhaal, gekleurd met wijsheid en vastberadenheid. De opnames zijn gemaakt met de kleinst mogelijke ecologische voetafdruk (alleen land- en zeeroutes).
EN From Patagonia to the mountains of Mexico, communities are uprising. They denounce the destruction of their territories and their lives. Drawing on their cultural heritage, they organize themselves to stop the carnage and to create inspiring solutions. The documentary Minga is an echo of these voices of resistance. Pauline and Damien spent two years with them and let them have total freedom of speech. Their testimonials, coming from so many different lands, weave a common story, colored with wisdom and determination. The shooting was done with the smallest ecological footprint possible (land and sea routes only).

NL Hagazussa is de duistere saga van een vrouw en haar strijd voor haar eigen geestelijke gezondheid. In een afgelegen Alpendorp in de 15e eeuw groeit de wees Albrun op tot een gemarkeerde vrouw. In een tijd waarin het heidense geloof in heksen en natuurgeesten angst en terreur zaaide onder het boerenvolk, verkent Hagazussa de dunne lijn tussen oude magie, geloof en waan.
Na de vertoning volgt een Q&A met de regisseur.
EN Hagazussa is the dark saga of a woman and her fight for her own sanity. In a remote Alpine village in the 15th century, the orphan Albrun grows up to become a marked woman. Set in a time when pagan beliefs in witches and nature spirits spread fear and terror in the minds of the peasant folk, Hagazussa explores the fine line between ancient magic, faith and delusion.

NL De kunstenaarsgroep El Colegio de la Desextinción infiltreerde in de vakantie van vier afstammelingen van de ‘Divine Caste’. Deze elite bouwde haar rijkdom op aan de slavernij op de sisalplantages van Yucatán, Mexico, eind 19e en begin 20e eeuw. Elk jaar verhuizen deze families naar hun weelderige zomerhuizen bij Chicxulub Puerto, gebouwd op dezelfde plaats waar de asteroïde insloeg die de dinosauriërs doodde. Op deze apocalyptische stranden heeft de kunstenaarsgroep de jonge erfgenamen voorgesteld om een film te schrijven en te spelen over de krater van Chicxulub, waarin ze hun ondernemersfantasieën ten tonele voeren. Deze documentaire is het resultaat van het politieke onbewustzijn van deze bevoorrechte groep.
Na afloop zal er een Q&A plaatsvinden met de regisseur.
EN During the 2020 pandemic summer, artists' group El Colegio de la Desextinción infiltrated into the holidays of four Divine Caste’s descendants. This elite built its wealth on slavery in the sisal plantations of Yucatán, Mexico, at the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th century. Every year these families move to their opulent summer houses at Chicxulub Puerto, built at the same place where the asteroid that killed the dinosaurs hit. In these apocalyptic beaches, seducers of asteroids and conquistadors, we proposed the young heirs to write and star in a film about Chicxulub’s crater, in which they staged their entrepreneur fantasies. This documentary is the result of the political unconsciousness of this peninsular ethnic group.
A Q&A with the filmmaker will take place after the screening.

EN Kissable Screens is Cavia’s monthly programme of pornography, focusing on sex/body positivity and supporting ethical independent porn films and filmmakers. In June, we invite the collective Let’s Talk About Sex based in Groningen to share the bond of love, BDSM in terms of erotic violence and domination.
“Let’s Talk About Sex is a non-profit organization that provides anyone residing in and around Groningen with diverse information on sex and consent, valuable resources, and a comforting community. At Let’s Talk About Sex we also raise awareness of the ins and outs of consent, sexual education, and pleasure, and much more. Basically, we talk about all the sex-related topics our schools didn’t deem appropriate. Most importantly, our platform aims to be inclusive, bringing diverse people and experiences into a safe environment. Let’s Talk About Sex aims to create a safe space for people in Groningen to come together and talk about sex, learn about consent, get access to valuable resources, and raise awareness of sexual health and pleasure. Our vision is to become a broad platform that brings together diverse experiences on sex and knowledge of consent, so we can learn, share and grow as a community!

IHLIA: No Straight Lines – The Rise of Queer Comics + nagesprek

NL In het kader van de expositie 'Graphic Sapphic: Lesbische comics en cartoons in de jaren 70 – 90 uit het Verenigd Koninkrijk en Nederland', tot en met 9 juli 2023 te zien bij IHLIA LGBTI Heritage, vertoont IHLIA de documentaire No Straight Lines (Vivian Kleiman, 2021). Waar de expositie zich richt op de opkomst van lesbische stripboeken in Nederland en het Verenigd Koninkrijk, voegt deze vertoning een perspectief op de ontwikkeling van queer comics in de Verenigde Staten toe.
De film, die in 2021 op het Outfest Los Angeles de Grand Jury Prize in ontvangst mocht nemen, laat zien hoe vijf pionierende cartoonisten, inmiddels alom gelauwerde personen, queer onderwerpen zoals de aidscrisis, uit de kast komen, de openstelling van het huwelijk, en de raakvlakken tussen seksuele identiteit, gender, ras en disability in beeld hebben gebracht. Op humoristische wijze verbeelden ze wat het betekent om queer te zijn in alledaagse contexten in een altijd veranderende wereld. De documentaire stelt zowel hun werk als de wisselwerking met hun persoonlijke levens centraal.
Na afloop van de vertoning een nagesprek met onderzoeker Vasiliki Belia, PhD kandidaat aan de Universiteit van Maastricht en curator van de tentoonstelling Graphic Sapphic.

EN As part of the exhibition "Graphic Sapphic: Lesbian Comics and Cartoons in the 1970s – 1990s from the United Kingdom and the Netherlands," now on display at IHLIA LGBTI Heritage (until July 9, 2023), IHLIA is screening the documentary No Straight Lines (Vivian Kleiman, 2021). Where the exhibition focuses on the rise of lesbian comics in the Netherlands and the United Kingdom, this screening adds a perspective on the development of queer comics in the United States.
The film, which was awarded the Grand Jury Prize at Outfest Los Angeles in 2021, shows how 5 pioneering cartoonists, now widely lauded individuals, have portrayed queer issues such as the AIDS crisis, coming out, same-sex marriage, and the intersections between sexual identity, gender, race and disability. In a playful and humorous way, they depict what it means to be queer in everyday contexts in an ever-changing world. The documentary focuses on both their work and its interaction with their personal lives.
Following the screening, a discussion with researcher Vasiliki Belia, PhD candidate at Maastricht University and curator of the exhibition Graphic Sapphic.
