For the first edition of Cavia in Concert, a series of film and music performances that will take place in the amazing hall of the Nassaukerk in collaboration with Podium Nassau, Filmhuis Cavia is proud to present to you Faust (1926) by legendary German expressionist director F.W. Murnau!

Widely praised as Murnau’s most baroque work, Faust is a breathtaking masterpiece of visual storytelling, illustrating the director’s mission to transform cinema into an art form in its own right. The film retells the classic German legend of “Faust”, in which an alchemist makes a deal with the devil himself in order to save his plague-stricken village, only to succumb to human temptation.

Join us in celebrating the 100 years since the first release of this breathtaking film on a truly special occasion, as the screening will be accompanied by a live soundtrack by the Minute Made Music Piano Trio. The trio will be composed by Isa Schouten (cello), Björk Semey (double bass) and Oscar Jan Hoogland (piano and church organ).

This ensemble was created just for this occasion by Oscar Jan Hoogland, a leading figure in the Dutch improvisation scene. As a student of the late pianist, composer, and improviser Misha Mengelberg, he's torn through the Amsterdam jazz and improvisation scene like a tornado, breaking down norms and experimenting with new ways of imagining concert music. Always attentive to the community of musicians around him, for this adventure Oscar has chosen Isa Schouten and Björk Semey to accompany him. They are two great improvisers of international experience and a great love for film, representing a new generation of genre-bending musicians taking the Amsterdam scene by storm.
