Recent short films from
the Indonesian New Wave

"Something invigorating and full-bodied is brewing in Indonesia, and it’s not a cup of mocha java. It’s a cinematic resurgence, the biggest since the early 2000s, when Rudy Soedjarwo’s 2002 teen romance "Apa ada dengan cinta?" (What’s With Love?) rocked the Southeast Asia market while in the same year Riri Riza’s “Eliana Eliana” stunned the festival circuit with femme-centric social realism." ( Variety News, May 2017)

EN Indonesian cinema is here to stay! Cavia is happy to present a collection of short films by up and coming Indonesian filmmakers, disclosing a wide range of independent voices from Central Java and surroundings. Diverse in narrative style and subject matter, this new wave of filmmakers flirt with neo-realism and expose through the observation of daily-life, the country’s current debates on religion, politics and gender with an imaginative and renewed filmic language. All films have English subtitles.
