Het is precies vijftig jaar geleden dat de wereld voor altijd werd veranderd: in mei 1968 verenigden zich in Parijs de arbeiders, studenten, anti-oorlog demonstranten, feministen, maoïsten, socialisten, trotskisten, anarchisten, situationisten en stalinisten. Het is een tijd die natuurlijk ook van groot belang is voor Filmhuis Cavia zelf. Wat zouden we als sociaal en politiek bewuste bioscoop zijn zonder deze grensverleggende doorbraken? Mei 2018 staat daarom bij Cavia geheel in het teken van mei 1968, met films van toen ter inspiratie voor nu, maar ook met films van nu over huidige protestbewegingen. L'imagination au pouvoir!

NL The Battle of Algiers is niet zomaar een oorlogsfilm. Het is een case study in moderne oorlogsvoering. Het is een schoolvoorbeeld van opstand en antikoloniale weerstand. Vrouwen, kinderen, mannen: iedereen neemt deel aan de rebellie tegen de Franse overheerser in Algerije in de jaren 50. Vrouwen kleden zich meer 'Europees', flirten met de Franse overheersers om zich een weg langs alle controleposten te banen, om zo hun bommen te kunnen plaatsen. Buiten oorlogsvoering opent deze kenmerkende scene de discussie over een klassenstrijd en legt hiermee de basis voor een film uniek in benadering – geweld wordt van beide kanten van het conflict getoond, hoewel het uiteindelijk een strijd van messen versus kanonnen, opstand versus bezetter blijft. Pontecorvo's tour de force is dezer dagen nog altijd verbluffend relevant.
EN The battle of Algiers isn't just any kind of war movie. It's a case study in modern warfare. It's a prime example of insurgency and anticolonial resistance. Women, children, men: everyone takes part in the rebellion against the French occupation of Algeria in the 1950s. Women dress up to look more 'European', flirt with the French occupants all to get through to checkpoints in order to plant their bombs. More than just war, this striking scene opens up a class discussion and paves the way for a movie unique in its approach – it shows violence from both sides of the conflict, though in the end it remains a conflict of knives versus cannons, insurgency versus occupant. Pontecorvo’s tour de force remains to be astonishingly relevant today.

NL De perikelen van de klassenstrijd worden op een unieke manier besproken in dit amusante en leerzame experiment van Situationistisch détournement. In plaats van nietszeggende dialoog worden de gruizige filmbeelden van de tweederangs kungfufilm Crush uit 1972 voorzien van radicale kritiek op de culturele hegemonie van de heersende klasse. Het commentaar beschrijft op een zeer hilarische manier hoe het conflict tussen het proletariaat en de bureaucratie in een systeem van staatskapitalisme in elkaar steekt. Ondertussen zien we hoe er in wilde kungfu-gevechten, vol kenmerkend anti-kolonialistisch sentiment, hardhandig met de Japanse heersers wordt afgerekend.
EN The debate about the issues of class conflict rages in a unique way in this amusing as well as instructive experiment of Situationist détournement. Instead of meaningless dialogue, the gritty film images of the second-rate kung fu movie Crush from 1972 are supplied with radical critique on the cultural hegemony of the ruling class. In a hilarious way the commentary describes the conflict between the proletariat and the bureaucrats in a system of state capitalism. Meanwhile we see how the Japanese rulers are taken care of in wild kung fu fights, full of typical anti-colonial sentiment.

De film zit vol unieke interviews met toonaangevende stemmen van de Black Power-beweging in Amerika, zoals Angela Davis, Eldridge Cleaver en Stokely Carmichael. Het is samengesteld uit gevonden beeldmateriaal van een Zweeds camerateam dat tussen 1967 en 1975 in Amerika opnames maakte. Naast archiefmateriaal zie je ook interviews met meer hedendaagse activisten en muzikanten, zoals Erykah Badu, Ahmir Questlove Thompson (van The Roots), Talib Kweli en Sonia Sanchez. De film is een document waaruit de trots en trotsering van de activisten naar voren komt, maar die ook de frustratie en verwoesting weergeeft waaruit de opstand is ontstaan.
