De Cavia’s draaien er in maart niet omheen en roeren hun donzige staartjes: een opaak leidmotief met een diversiteit waar je u tegen zegt. Roergangers als Bruce Lee en Delphine Seyrig maken hun opwachting. En we gaan serieus de globe over (Examined Life), met een uitgebreide stop-over te Indonesië (shorts, Masked Monkeys, Wariazone), waarna we huiswaarts keren richting het wildere Westen (Slow West). Alsof het nog niet genoeg is verzorgen we deze maand ook het onvolprezen en terugkerende experimentele filmfestival Atrabilious. Buy the ticket, take the ride.

NL Al kijk je maar één Kung-fu film in je hele leven, zorg dat het deze is. Het was de film die in 1972 de Chinese film bekend maakte bij een wereldwijd publiek. Het is Bruce Lee’s tweede film (na The Big Boss van het jaar ervoor) en toont de ster in zijn volle vechtlustige glorie. De film speelt zich af aan het begin van de twintigste eeuw, toen de Japanners Shanghai hadden bezet. Het volgt de student Chen Zhen en wilde wraakacties voor de moord op zijn legendarische Kung fu-meester Huo Yuan-jia (die overigens echt heeft bestaan). In een moordlustige razernij gaat Chen Zhen tekeer tegen de Japanse bezetter.

NL Speciaal voor International Women’s Day vertoont Filmhuis Cavia de klassieke feministische documentaire Sois Belle et Tais-Toi.
Met de toename in populariteit van de #MeToo-beweging staan vrouwenrechten eindelijk weer volop in de schijnwerpers. En nu smeerlappen als Weinstein eindelijk aangepakt worden is het tijd om ons te beseffen dat eerdere feministen de problemen aan de oorsprong van dit schandaal al lang hadden geconstateerd. Lang voordat seksisme, objectificatie en seksuele intimidatie in de filmindustrie serieus werden genomen maakte Franse actrice (o.a. L'Année dernière à Marienbad) en feminist Delphine Seyrig de documentaire Sois belle et tais-toi. De film, die in 1976 werd opgenomen en pas in 1981 uitkwam, bestaat uit interviews met 24 bekende actrices. Zo vertellen grootheden als Jane Fonda, Maria Schneider en Ellen Burstyn over de eenzijdige rollen die ze toebedeeld krijgen, de dingen die van hen gevraagd worden en hoe ze niet serieus genomen worden als professionals.

With the surge in popularity of the #MeToo movement, women’s right are finally in the spotlight again. Now that pigs like Weinstein are finally being confronted, it is time to realise how earlier feminists had already pointed out the issues at the center of this scandal. Long before sexism, objectification and sexual intimidation was taken seriously in the film industry French actrice (i.e. Last Year in Marienbad) and feminist Delphine Seyrig made the documentary Be Pretty and Shut Up. The film, which was shot in 1976 but released only in 1981, consists of a series of interviews with 24 well-known actrices. Acting legends such as Jane Fonda, Maria Schneider and Ellen Burstyn talk about the problematic roles they are offered, the things that are asked of them and how they are not taken seriously as professionals.

NL De gemaskerde kunsten van Indonesië zijn duizenden jaren oud. Ze worden wayang topeng (wayang: schaduw of marionet; topeng: masker) genoemd. Men gaat ervan uit dat wayang topeng voortkwam uit tribale doodsrituelen, waarbij gemaskerde dansers als de tolken van de goden werden beschouwd. In de laagste rangen van de Javaanse samenleving is een unieke manifestatie van deze gemaskerde tradities te vinden. De beoefenaars zijn artiesten en hun ambitie is om gerespecteerd te worden, om geëerd te worden, om succesvol te zijn.
EN The masked arts of Indonesia are thousands of years old. They are commonly referred to as wayang topeng (wayang: shadow or puppet; topeng: mask). It is believed that wayang topeng originated from tribal death rites, where masked dancers were considered the interpreters of the gods. In the lowest rungs of Javanese society a unique manifestation of these masked traditions can be found. Its practitioners are performers, their ambition is to be respected, to be honored, to be successful.

NL 'Heliopolis Heliopolis' werd door een opstandige priester gecreëerd als een hulpmiddel om studenten te trainen in het ontwerp van een revolutionaire stad die bedoeld was om de oude stad Heliopolis te overtreffen. Dit ondanks het feit dat de priester en zijn studenten nooit Heliopolis hebben bezocht en hun model uitsluitend op teksten en tweedehands kennis hebben gebaseerd. In de loop van de tijd kreeg dit model een fantastisch karakter en werd het zowel minutieus gedetailleerd als wild onwaarschijnlijk. OJOBOCA's Heliopolis Heliopolis vertegenwoordigt deze innerlijke staat van moedwillige verwarring.
EN ‘Heliopolis Heliopolis’ was created by an insurgent priest as a tool to train students in the design of a revolutionary city meant to surpass the ancient city of Heliopolis. This in spite of the fact that the priest and his students appear to have never visited Heliopolis and based their model exclusively on texts and secondhand knowledge. In time this model gained a fantastical nature, becoming both meticulously elaborate and wildly implausible. OJOBOCA’s Heliopolis Heliopolis represents this inner state of wilful confusion.

charmant en begripvol: Wariazone is een onafhankelijke documentaire van
Kiwa en Terje Toomistu over transgenderonderwerpen in Indonesië en de
relaties tussen genderidentiteit en vrijheid. Indonesische transvrouwen ‒ die waria worden genoemd ‒ zijn een bekende groep mensen in het
culturele mozaïek van het land met 's werelds grootste
moslimgemeenschap. De film laat de mensen, hun geschiedenis, tradities
en sociale relaties in de waria-gemeenschap zien. Door middel van
stemmen van ongeveer 40 waria roept de film ook vragen op over de

De vertoning wordt geïntroduceerd door Terje Toomistu, momenteel een bezoekend onderzoeker aan de Universiteit van Amsterdam op het departement van antropologie, waar zij haar doctoraat schrijft op basis van haar veldonderzoek met waria in Java en Papoea. Zij kan meer vertellen over haar huidige onderzoek tijdens de Q&A na afloop.

charming and insightful, Wariazone is an independent documentary by
Kiwa and Terje Toomistu about transgender subjects in Indonesia, and the
relations between gender identity and freedom. Indonesian transgender
women ‒ who are known as waria ‒ are a well-known group of people in the
cultural mosaic of the country with the world’s largest Muslim
community. The film showcases the people, the history, traditions, and
social relations of the waria community. Through the voices of around 40
waria the film also raises questions about the politicization of
morality and religion after the reform era in Indonesia.

The screening is introduced by Terje Toomistu, who is currently a visiting researcher in University of Amsterdam at the Department of Anthropology, writing her PhD dissertation based on her field research with waria in Java and Papua. Slow West

NL Er iets iets bijzonders aan de hand met het genre van de western. Nog voordat series als Westworld en Godless alle verwachtingen over ‘cowboys en indianen’ omver wierpen was er de kleine Britse indiefilm Slow West, het debuut van de Schotse regisseur John Maclean. Dit zwartkomisch juweeltje in de stijl van Cormac McCarthy is een zelfbewuste en gedeconstrueerde versie van de western, waar galgenhumor en bij vlagen extreem geweld de doorgewinterde filmkijker continu laten verrassen. Zo wordt het genre dat de beste vergelijking biedt voor de grondvesten van de Amerikaanse maatschappij (met zijn machismo, voorliefde voor wapens en omgang met mensen van een andere huidskleur) een heerlijk cynisch tegengif voor het absurde Amerikaanse gedrag van vandaag de dag.
EN Something special is happening with the genre of the western. Before series like Westworld and Godless obliterated all expectations about “cowboys and indians”, small British indie film Slow West, the debut of Scottish director John Maclean, was doing that very thing. This pitch-black comedy in the style of Cormac McCarthy is a self-aware and deconstructed version of the western, where gallows humour and random extreme violence never seize to surprise the seasoned film viewer. In this way, the genre that provides the best comparison for the foundations of American society (with its machismo, love of weapons and treatment of people of colour) becomes a wonderfully cynical antidote to the absurd American behaviour we see today.
