Miguel Llansó, 2015, Ethiopia, 68'

We invite you to the Amsterdam premiere of this bound-to-be cult classic, the Ethiopian postapocalyptic sci-fi CRUMBS.

After making several striking short films, Ethiopia-based Spaniard Miguel Llansó has now realised his first feature film, Crumbs. Just as in his previous work, the protagonist in this romantic, Surrealist science-fiction epic is played by unique small actor Daniel Tadesse.

The story is set against the background of spectacular post-apocalyptic Ethiopian landscapes, where our diminutive superhero Gagano - on the one hand gripped by daydreams and on the other by constant fears - has had enough of collecting the valuable crumbs of decayed civilisation, the valuable high points of which are merchandise from Michael Jackson and Michael Jordan. When a spaceship that has been hovering high in the sky for years starts showing signs of activity, Gagano has to overcome his fears - but also a witch, Santa Claus and second-generation Nazis - to find out that things aren’t quite the way he thought. Paris is Burning

Jennie Livingston, 1990, USA, 71'

Jennie Livingston's iconic documentary offers an intimate portrait of the Harlem drag balls in the late 1980s, where rival fashion 'houses' compete for trophies and cash prizes in categories such as 'face', 'femme queen realness' and 'voguing'. Paris is Burning celebrates how one group of New Yorkers, for whom racism, homophobia, transphobia, poverty and AIDS were all too real, created a world of sustenance and joy.

TranScreen presents: Kate Bornstein is a Queer & Pleasant Danger

Sam Feder, 2013, USA/Canada, 70', English spoken, no subs

Performance artist and writer Kate Bornstein explodes binaries while deconstructing gender—and her own identity. Trans-dyke. Reluctant polyamorist. Sadomasochist. Recovering Scientologist. Pioneering gender outlaw. Sam Feder’s playful and meditative portrait on Bornstein, captures rollicking public performances and painful personal revelations as it bears witness to Kate as a trailblazing artist-theorist-activist who inhabits a space between male and female with wit, style and astonishing candor.

We also see Kate candidly sharing her process of aging. While her brain is sharp, and her sex life is vital, mortality is not abstract anymore: the prospect of death is real as she battles lung cancer. Director Sam Feder followed Kate for three years, capturing intimate and public moments alike, and their friendship was the foundation that allowed for many of the film’s more candid and revealing moments. Trailer.

Meet Auntie Kate: “Do whatever it takes to make your life worth living. Just don’t be mean.”
